Regarding Medicare at the moment Counsellors cant access medicare rebates. You will find that you could be paying a lot more for a psychologist even though you get the Medicare rebate, after paying the out-of-pocket expense for a psychologist.
The counsellor's fee is many times cheaper or the same as a psychologist minus the out-of-pocket expenses.
Also, you don't need a mental health care plan or see a GP. You can just book in.

You may find that you are okay with 6 to 12 sessions and may just need a booster after that, if any issues arise. 12 sessions are recommended.
It's always depending on your issues and what you are going through and presenting, at the time, everyone has different needs and things going on, it's always based on you and what support you need whether its short or long term counselling.
